Learn from aquaculture experts
The SmartAkva Learning Centre provides professional e-learning for people working with recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and land-based fish farming.
Our courses combine scientific knowledge with practical experience from the aquaculture industry. They are organised in thematic learning paths: start with a broad introduction to RAS, then go deeper in the topics most relevant to your work.
How it works
Free introduction
A short video that presents the Learning Centre, how the courses are structured and how to get started.
Level 1: Fundamentals
One course with one chapter for each learning path. It gives you an overview of the key areas of RAS and helps you decide where to go deeper.
Level 2: Advanced
One programme for each of the six learning paths. Courses are priced individually, so the price of a programme reflects the number of courses it contains.
Start with Fundamentals
Fundamentals introduces all six learning paths in one course. It is the recommended starting point if you are new to RAS, or if you want an overview before choosing what to study in depth.

Frequently asked questions
What can you offer that I cannot get at other online courses?
A structured learning path, not a collection of standalone courses. The courses are developed by SmartAkva and combine research-based knowledge with practical experience from RAS operations.
Level 1: Fundamentals
One course with one chapter for each of six topics: Introduction to RAS, Fish Physiology, Water Quality, Microbiology, RAS Technology, and Monitoring and Response. It gives you an overview of how the system works as a whole.
Level 2: Advanced
One programme for each topic, with two to four courses in each. Each programme builds on the corresponding chapter in Fundamentals and explores the topic in greater depth.
Fundamentals shows you how the topics connect. The programmes let you go deeper in the areas most relevant to your work.
Do I need previous experience?
No previous experience is required. The courses are designed for different levels of experience, including people who are completely new to RAS, as well as experienced operators, technicians, engineers and managers.
If you are new to RAS, Fundamentals gives you a solid foundation. If you already have experience, you can go directly to the programmes in the topics you want to strengthen.
How can I choose my courses?
For most learners, Fundamentals is the best starting point. It introduces all six topics and makes it easier to see which programmes are relevant to your work.
SmartAkva also offers a Knowledge Mapping Service for companies that want to identify competence levels and knowledge gaps within their teams. By assessing your organisation’s current knowledge and operational needs, we can help identify relevant areas for training and recommend a targeted learning approach.
Can the training programme be adapted to our team’s needs?
Yes. SmartAkva can tailor the training to your organisation’s competence needs, experience level and operational challenges. You can combine e-learning courses and programmes with seminars, workshops, on-site RAS training and other customised training activities.
Can I combine e-learning with face-to-face training?
Yes. SmartAkva Learning Centre can be combined with practical, face-to-face training to create a learning programme tailored to your needs. In addition to e-learning, SmartAkva offers seminars and workshops, on-site RAS training, fish welfare training and company-specific training programmes.
E-learning can provide the theoretical foundation, while face-to-face training allows participants to discuss specific challenges, work with practical examples and apply their knowledge in real-world situations. Training can be adapted to your team’s knowledge level, operational needs and production requirements.
When can I start studying?
You can start studying whenever it suits you. Our e-learning courses are flexible and available online, so you can begin at a time that fits your schedule and learn at your own pace.
