Learn from aquaculture experts

The SmartAkva Learning Centre provides professional e-learning for people working with recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and land-based fish farming.

Our courses combine scientific knowledge with practical experience from the aquaculture industry, giving you the knowledge and tools needed to better understand, operate and develop modern RAS facilities.

We offer both single purchase courses and program packages

At Smartakva, you can choose between individual courses or our complete learning programs.

Whether you are new to RAS, an experienced operator, technician, engineer or manager, SmartAkva offers both individual courses and tiered learning programs to strengthen your competence and support better decisions in your daily work. Start with a single course on a specific topic, or join the tiered programs at the level that matches your current experience.

Single Courses

Want to sharpen your skills in a specific area? Our single courses let you dive straight into a chosen topic, without committing to a full programme. Perfect if you're looking for targeted, practical knowledge you can apply right away.

Learning programs

Our tiered programmes — three in total — are designed to work together as a complete learning path, taking you from foundational knowledge to advanced expertise. Whether you are new to RAS or an experienced operator, technician, engineer or manager, you can join at the level that matches your current experience and build your competence step by step from there.

Our three program-levels for building RAS competence

Progress from fundamentals to advanced RAS optimisation. Each level builds practical understanding and decision-making skills for stable water quality, fish welfare, and reliable production outcomes. You start where you are, and when you're done, you can do something specific.

BRONZE

Fundamentals of RAS Operations & Water Quality

Build a practical understanding of the key systems, processes, and operational routines that keep recirculating aquaculture systems running safely and reliably. This level covers water quality, filtration, biofilters, oxygenation, CO2 removal, pH control, UV treatment, sensors and monitoring, sludge treatment, intake water, biosecurity, fish welfare, and fish transport.
01
You'll learn how these processes work together, what influences their performance, and how to apply practical principles for monitoring, operation, and maintenance. The courses are designed to help RAS teams build confidence in day-to-day operations, recognise important changes and risks, and make informed decisions that support stable water quality, fish welfare, and reliable production.
02
You'll learn how to connect water quality and biological processes with production targets, system capacity, operational routines, and fish performance. The courses focus on practical decision-making, monitoring, optimisation, and management strategies that help you operate RAS more effectively, balance biological and technical constraints, and support stable, predictable production.

SILVER

Performance & Production Management

Build on your fundamental RAS knowledge and develop a deeper understanding of how biological processes, system performance, and production planning work together. This level covers advanced topics including microbial management, particle management, light management, and production planning.

GOLD

Intervention, Optimisation & Advanced Management

Take your RAS expertise to the next level by developing an advanced understanding of system optimisation, biological performance, and integrated production management. This level focuses on how complex biological, technical, and operational factors interact-and how to use data, monitoring, and system knowledge to improve performance and manage risk.
03
You'll develop the skills to evaluate system performance, optimise processes, identify opportunities for improvement, and make informed decisions across the entire production system. The courses are designed for professionals who want to move beyond day-to-day operations and take a more strategic approach to RAS performance, efficiency, fish welfare, and long-term production outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know

What can you offer that I cannot get at other online courses?

A tiered programme, not a single course. We start with the biology — not the components. How the levels work:

  • Level Bronze – Fundamentals
Courses that build the foundation: the system, water quality, fish physiology, microbiology and technology.

  • Level Silver – Troubleshooting
Courses that build on Bronze: diagnostics and problem-solving in daily operations.

  • Level Gold – Intervention
Courses that build on Silver: designing corrective interventions for complex challenges.

Each level builds on the last. You start where you are. When you're done with a course, you can do something specific — and you know the next level assumes you've just learned this.

Can I combine e-learning with face-to-face training?

Yes. SmartAkva Learning Centre can be combined with practical, face-to-face training to create a learning programme tailored to your needs. In addition to e-learning, SmartAkva offers seminars and workshops, on-site RAS training, fish welfare training and company-specific training programmes.

E-learning can provide the theoretical foundation, while face-to-face training allows participants to discuss specific challenges, work with practical examples and apply their knowledge in real-world situations. Training can be adapted to your team’s knowledge level, operational needs and production requirements.

Can the training programme be adapted to our team’s needs?

Yes. SmartAkva can tailor the learning programme to your organisation’s specific competence needs, experience level and operational challenges. You can combine individual e-learning courses with seminars, workshops, on-site RAS training and other customised training activities

How can I choose my courses?

SmartAkva offers a Knowledge Mapping Service for companies that want to identify competence levels and knowledge gaps within their teams.
By assessing your organisation's current knowledge and operational needs, we can help identify relevant areas for training and recommend a targeted learning approach.

Do I need previous experience ?

No previous experience is required. The courses are designed for different levels of experience, including people who are completely new to RAS, as well as experienced operators, technicians, engineers and managers.

For beginners, the introductory courses provide a solid foundation in the fundamental principles of RAS and land-based aquaculture. More advanced courses are available for those who already have experience and want to deepen their knowledge.

When can I start studying ?

You can start studying whenever it suits you.
Our e-learning courses are flexible and available online, so you can begin at a time that fits your schedule and learn at your own pace.
